| Day 1: We meet at your town of departure to board our bus to O’Hare Airport, and check in for our flight to Louisville. Upon arrival in Louisville, we are transferred to our hotel. (D)
Day 2: Enjoy a driving tour of Frankfort, the Kentucky capital, with one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the country. Then, continue on to Lexington, the geographic center of the famed Bluegrass Region, where we will settle in for the next three nights at the Radisson Hotel. (B, D)
Day 3: In the morning we will drive through the lush rolling county-side to Kentucky Horse Park featuring tributes at the gravesite of the great Man O’War, the colorful Parade of Breeds, and the International Museum of the Horse. A city tour will show us the highlights of Lexington, known as the “Athens of the West” We will visit the Mary Todd Lincoln House, the first restored site in America to honor a first lady. (B, D)
Day 4: Travel to Berea, the “Folk Arts & Crafts Capital of Kentucky.” Drive through the tree-lined campus of Berea College and learn how this tuition-free college began. Then, tour Churchill Weavers, founded in 1922, and observe the weaving process from warping to the finished product. Enjoy lunch at popular Boone Tavern, known for its spoonbread. Then, return to Lexington for the night. (B, L)
Day 5: After breakfast and check-out for our hotel we depart for the fascinating Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, the most completely restored Shaker community in the country. Everything is authentic including 19th century buildings constructed by Shakers who believed that work is worship. Costumed interpreters and artisans demonstrate a variety of crafts. In answer to the ringing of the dinner bell, we will enjoy a delicious Shaker-style lunch in the “Trustee’s Office.”
After lunch, we will continue to Bardstown, “the Bourbon capital of the world.” Here we will tour the Federal Hill Manor, made famous as “My Old Kentucky Home” in the song by Stephen Foster. A costumed guide will delight you with the history of this home before you settle in for the night at the Hampton Inn. (B, L, D)
Day 6: After breakfast we will leave and head to the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site and the Lincoln Museum in Hodgenville featuring full-size wax figures in scenes telling his life story. Then, make a stop at the Maker’s Mark Distillery before continuing on to Louisville where we will spend the night at the Galt House. End the day with a Farewell Dinner. (B, D)
Day 7: Today you will be served a track breakfast at Churchill Downs. Then, watch the horses on their morning workout before visiting the unique Kentucky Derby Museum with hands-on exhibits and 360-degree, multi-image shows “The Greatest Race.” We will then be transferred back to the airport for our flight back to Chicago.
