Chicago — The Windy City
What gave Chicago the nickname “Windy City”?
It depends on who you talk to. A pundit might explain that Chicago’s notoriously long-winded politicians gave it this name. A weatherman would not hesitate to explain about Chicago’s geographical and climatic location and all about the “lake-effect”. Someone might bring out the ancient explanation that Chicago’s cultural and especially, architectural influences shift and change like the blowing of the wind.
Sometimes referred to as the “Second City”- the city that rose again from the ashes of the fire caused so famously by one Mrs. O’Leary’s cow- Chicago stands second to none among lovers of great food, great art, and great culture. Another name for Chicago is “The City of Broad Shoulders”, which is evidenced by the friendly, outgoing, welcoming inhabitants of the city you will meet while you’re here. Chicago is reputed to have more restaurants per capita than any other city in the United States- and if you really want a challenge, it is said that one can eat out 3 meals a day for a year in Chicago, and never have to go to the same restaurant twice.
