A Quarterly Artick on Music Group Travel
Dear Tami,
We travel to Orlando with our choir every other year. We usually purchase 1 meal coupon/day for our students. I noticed on our most recent proposal that you are providing Disney Dining Cards instead of meal coupons. Can you explain what the dining cards are?
– I. Dine, Mickey Mouse H.S.

Disney is providing new Dining Cards for student groups this year. They are similar to store gift cards. Each card will have an allotted dollar amount for the day for your students to purchase food. The good news is that the card can only be used for food. Students can use the cards at any of the restaurants or food vendors on Disney property. We can purchase multiple cards for the week so the students won’t be able to use their entire card at a more expensive restaurant and be left with no money to eat for the rest of the week. A plus to the dining card is that it fits in a wallet and isn’t as bulky as the meal coupon. Like the Disney meal coupons, the Dining Cards can not be replaced if they are lost. TC

Dear Tami,
We are traveling to New York this spring with our band and orchestra. Our chaperones are paying the same rate as the students, so I don’t want them to have to chaperone all day long and then be on duty in the evening. How much would it cost to hire a private security guard?
– Bea Safe, Comfort H.S.

Private security usually costs $30/hour and we need to hire them for a minimum of 7 hours/night. We suggest having them on duty from 10:30 p.m. – 5:30 a.m. The security guard will meet the director and tour escort in the hotel lobby at his starting time. At this time, we will provide him with a copy of your group’s rooming list. The guard is only responsible for watching your group’s rooms. He will report to the director during the night if there are any problems with one of your rooms. It is very reassuring to know someone is protecting your group so you and your chaperones will be well rested for the next day’s events. TC

Dear Tami,
I was speaking to another director over the summer and he was telling me about an awesome clinic experience you set up with Anthony Maiello at George Mason University. We are traveling to San Antonio this spring and we were wondering if there is an opportunity for a clinic in Texas?
– Lone Star Seminar H.S.

We are able to set up clinics at virtually any college or university across the country. We have established relationships with many of the music professors in destinations that are well traveled. There is also a unique clinic experience in New York called “New York Offstage.” We are able to contract a NY professional musician who either works with the Philharmonic, with a Broadway show or in another professional capacity. This person will contact you ahead of time to find out what you want to gain from the clinic experience. Upon arrival the musician will work with your group for approximately 2 hours on his/her current repertoire and then will take the last 15 minutes for questions and answers about working in the professional music industry. Please contact your BRT Travel Consultant to add a clinic experience to your upcoming tour. TC
